My First Trip to Belgium: Friends, Food, and Reflections

I love travel as it helps me stay mindful.

My recent short trip from the Netherlands to Belgium was a whirlwind of moments filled with laughter, great food, and cherished friendships. It was an invitation from my Chinese bestie.

This video was filmed in Brussels, Belgium, on August 24, 2019.

Exploring Brussels: Stories in Every Corner

I had the chance to explore the heart of Brussels, a city where every corner seems to tell a story. One standout experience was visiting a historic square where each side held something significant:

  • The Parliament: Representing the voice of the people.
  • The Embassies: The open door to global diplomacy.
  • The Finance Sector: Where major companies operate, one of which controls a huge portion of Belgium’s economy.
  • The King’s Residence: Adding a royal touch to this fascinating square.

Learning about the cultural and historical importance of these places made me appreciate the layers of life within the city.

Friendship, Warm Tea, and Belgian Breakfast

I spent the night at a friend’s house, and their hospitality reminded me why I value connections so much. My friend greeted us with hot tea and a classic Belgian breakfast—fresh butter, bread, and spreads that felt so homely. It reminded me of Dutch breakfasts, but there was something special about enjoying it in the warmth of a friend’s home.

The Best Pasta Ever (No, Really!)

We had dinner at a nearly century-old restaurant in the city. Let me tell you, the pasta I had there? Absolute magic. The noodles tasted unlike any I’ve had before—fresh, rich, and bursting with flavor. It’s the kind of meal that makes you pause and savor every bite.

A Missed Countryside Adventure

Unfortunately, I couldn’t visit the countryside where my best friend’s boyfriend lives. We’d planned to pick fresh berries and apples from the trees, but time wasn’t on our side. It’s a bit of a regret, but it gives me something to look forward to next time.

Why I Love Coding: Freedom and Flexibility

Amid the beauty of Belgium, I found myself reflecting on why I started programming. The freedom it offers is unparalleled. Whether I’m on a train, at home, or sitting in a café, I can open my laptop and work from anywhere. On this trip, I even did a little coding while taking in the city sights. It’s this flexibility that keeps me motivated and reminds me why I chose this path.

Until Next Time, Belgium

As I waited for my train back to the Netherlands, I felt a mix of emotions—grateful for the time spent with friends and inspired to dive back into my work. Trips like these, even short ones, remind me of the importance of balancing life, work, and the simple pleasures in between.

Here’s to the next adventure, wherever it may take me!
