Life of a software developer in shanghai: weekend study

This video was filmed in Shanghai, China, on June 28, 2021.

When I returned to China earlier this year, my initial plan was to visit friends in Mexico. However, life got more complicated than expected, and those plans had to be postponed. Instead, I’ve found myself building a new routine in Shanghai, where I work as a software developer. While my job keeps me busy for over 40 hours a week, I’ve discovered the joy of creating a fulfilling life outside of office hours.

Finding Quiet Moments

One thing I cherish about weekends is the freedom to study and work on personal projects in peace. Interestingly, I often find myself heading back to the office on weekends—not to work, but to enjoy the rare quiet moments it offers.

Shanghai is a bustling, vibrant city, but it can also be overwhelming with its constant noise. Construction, phone calls, and general activity fill the air almost everywhere, every day. For instance, I’ve been woken up countless mornings by the relentless construction in my neighborhood. In such a fast-paced environment, the calm and quiet of the office feel like a luxury I once took for granted during my years in the Netherlands.

Personal Projects

I’m currently diving into an exciting personal project, which I’ll share more about in future updates. The process of learning and building something on my own has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a reminder of the value of dedicating time to things that truly inspire and energize you.

A New Hobby: Bodyweight Workouts

Another life-changing habit I’ve picked up is bodyweight training. Initially, I thought running was the only workout I needed, but after some training, I’ve become a big fan of this versatile and skill-oriented form of exercise.

Not only has it improved my physical health, but it has also boosted my confidence and happiness. There’s something deeply satisfying about seeing gradual progress in both strength and technique. It’s a hobby that has brought me a sense of balance and relaxation amidst the busy days.

Looking Ahead

Life in Shanghai continues to be a mix of challenges and opportunities. I’m learning to navigate the noise, focus on personal growth, and embrace new habits that make me feel stronger, happier, and more at ease. Stay tuned for updates on my personal projects and reflections on this ever-evolving journey.
