Commuting to Work as a Software Developer: From Rotterdam Blaak to The Hague

Updated date: 11/16/2024

I live in Rotterdam but work in The Hague, which means I’ve mastered the art of train commuting—a classic Dutch experience shared by students, workers, and travelers alike. At least, that’s what I have felt.

The video was filmed in Rotterdam & The Hague, The Netherlands, on July 18, 2019.

The workday officially starts at 9:00 AM, but unless there’s a morning meeting, nobody’s staring at their watch to see when you stroll in.

I’m lucky enough to live just a 10-minute walk from Rotterdam Central Station, so most mornings, I casually saunter over to catch my 8:00 AM train. Today, though, I was unusually punctual. Not only did I beat the morning rush, but I also ended up being the first one in the office. Cue the ultimate flex: grabbing the first cup of coffee of the day. My favorite one is espresso. Small wins, right?

Our office layout is the perfect mix of structure and freedom. Sure, we have our assigned desks, but there are also flexible spots for when you’re just bored of the same view.
