Back to China after living in the netherlands for seven years

This video was filmed in Chongqing, China, on January 25, 2020.

After nearly seven years in the Netherlands, I had plans to move to Mexico City with my best friend. However, for various reasons, I postponed those plans for a year or two. Instead, I returned to China, where I lived with my brother in Chongqing before going to Shanghai.

Why I Returned to China

The main reason for my return is deeply personal—I want to spend more time with my parents as they grow older. I’ve realized that cherishing these moments with family is priceless, and I don’t want to regret not being there for them.

Another reason is my curiosity about the “new China.” When I left seven years ago, the country was very different. Today, with advancements like 5G, high-speed trains, and a mobile-first culture, I’m fascinated by how rapidly everything has changed. Being someone who loves technology, I see this as an opportunity to explore new projects and perhaps find meaningful work here.

While financial stability is important, my priority has always been freedom and happiness. Returning to China feels like the right choice to balance these priorities while staying close to my roots.

Embracing Positivity in China

Every country has its ups and downs, and China is no exception. Previously, I might have focused on the negatives, but now I aim to concentrate on the positive aspects. Instead of getting frustrated, I’m learning to confront challenges head-on and find solutions.

Yes, there are cultural challenges, like judgmental attitudes or the emphasis on “face” and image. But my years in the Netherlands taught me the value of self-confidence and authenticity. I’ve grown to appreciate simplicity, honesty, and building genuine connections with people who truly matter.

The Advantages of Life in China

  1. No Visa Worries
As a Chinese citizen, I no longer need to deal with the complexities of visa applications, renewals, and deadlines—a huge relief after years of navigating these processes in the Netherlands.
  2. Convenience
Life here is incredibly convenient. From mobile payments like Alipay and WeChat Pay to 24/7 food delivery apps, everything feels fast and seamless. I rarely need cash or even a wallet—my phone handles everything!
  3. Diverse Job Opportunities
Knowing the local language gives me an edge in both personal and professional life. While English can help in some sectors, the ability to speak Chinese opens far more doors here.
  4. Food Freedom
One thing I appreciate is the ease of accessing delicious meals without having to cook. Unlike my time in the Netherlands, where I spent a lot of time preparing meals, here I can order affordable, tasty food with a few taps on my phone.

Looking Ahead

While China is my home base, it’s not a permanent destination for now. I’m still passionate about traveling and exploring new opportunities around the world. For now, I’ll focus on making the most of my time here—spending quality time with family, building new experiences, and sharing more about life in China.
